Parish Council and Commissions

The Parish Pastoral Council is a consultative body that works in unity with the parish and pastoral staff. The council assists the pastor in identifying parish needs and helps to plan and implement parish programs and services. Participants at council meetings include the parish priests and pastoral staff, the school principal, the religious education director, nine members elected at large, committee chairpersons and representatives from other parish organizations.

The six parish commissions are extensions of the work of the parish Pastoral Council.

Parish Commissions and volunteer opportunities

 

Education and Faith Formation - As education and faith formation are life-long processes, the vision of the Education and Faith Formation Commission is to create and implement a plan that inspires ongoing formation and life-long learning for all parishioners in the Catholic faith by identifying key programs and resources to enhance the spiritual stewardship of all and to promote a life of discipleship. In addition, it is the desire of this commission to effectively communicate with all and to reach out to inactive Catholics and non-Catholics with love, understanding and witness.

Volunteer Opportunities can be found in the school (Athletics Board, Home and School Board, room parent, classroom or office helper, rummage sale, scrip team and MUCH more!), in Religious Education and Youth Ministry (catechist, aide), and with Adult Formation programs such as RCIA.

Parish Life - The purpose of the Parish Life Planning Area is to create a plan that will welcome, invite and encourage involvement of our parish family in parish activities, promoting a Catholic environment and enhancing and cultivating a sense of belonging – fostering relationships by building community among all age groups.

Volunteer Opportunities include our Sunday Coffee and Donuts and our many SMG events. One of the blessings of belonging to such a large and active parish is the opportunity to participate in a variety of events designed to bring us together in faith, fun and the spirit of togetherness! Most of these events include opportunities to volunteer to help out in the planning stage or at the event; many events have online volunteer signup!

Social Concerns and Outreach - The purpose of the Social Justice and Outreach Planning Area is to create a plan that will bring forth God’s Kingdom by demonstrating a visible witness of Christ’s love for others by being Christ in the bigger community. The plan seeks to call parishioners to trust and serve God, to serve community by ministering to the poor and suffering, bringing hope and Christ to the world. We further strive to demonstrate and teach social justice issues, allowing parishioners to live their baptismal call to holiness.

  • Blood Drive - SMG sponsors a blood drive twice a year.

  • Community Meal at Luke House. SMG volunteers prepare and serve meals to those in need.

  • Knights of Columbus - Catholic men's organization, KC supports the pope. Four principles: Charity, Unity, Fraternity, Patriotism. Activities include golf, Sunday breakfast four times a year, tootsie roll sale to benefit people with intellectual disabilities.

  • Military Service CommitteeOur mission is to show our unwavering support for our military men and women through the generosity of our parishioners. We collect donations of cash and supplies along with cards and notes and send them to our men and women in harm's way.

  • ProLife - Our ministry connects SMG parishioners to pro-life acitivites in the parish, diocese and community. We support local pro-life efforts of other organizations.

  • St. Vincent de Paul -  The SMG chapter of St. Vincent de Paul provides person-to-person service to our neighbors in need. Activities include food drives, blanket drives, weekly food collection, home visits (provide vouchers to families for furniture and clothing), school supply drive, toy drive, occasional meals/visits at Port St. Vincent, provide items to Port St. Vincent and Seton House. Stewardship and Development - The purpose of the Stewardship and Development Planning Area is to create a plan that will proactively promote and increase the meaningful involvement of people in the mission and vision of the parish. This will accomplished by articulating the needs, expanding giving of all types, providing ongoing communication and cultivating true discipleship through commitments of Time, Talent and Treasure.

Vocations - The purpose of the Vocations Planning Area is to create a plan that will define, support, promote and foster vocations of all types in the parish. The intention of the plan is to expand the understanding of vocations, while cultivating the importance of education, prayer and discernment, and showcasing the empowering role of parents and other role models in the discernment process.

Worship and Prayer - The purpose of the Worship and Prayer Planning Area is to create a plan to promote reverence in our liturgy, foster participation in worship, and enhance prayer opportunities.

Liturgy Committee - The Liturgy Committee is responsible for the daily, weekly and seasonal implementation of official guidelines for the celebration of liturgy, including the liturgical environment and music
Volunteer ministry opportunities include:

  • Altar servers
  • Commentators and Lectors
  • Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
  • Ministers of Hospitality including greeters and ushers
  • Ministry of Liturgical Environment, which is responsible to design and install the décor of the liturgical environment for each of the liturgical seasons.
  • Ministry of Sunday Sacristan, which sees to the preparation and set-up of all liturgical items needed for Mass and to their proper care after the Mass.

  • Music ministries include instrumentalists and cantors, as well as four organized choirs:
    • Adult Choir that sings at the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass and for other special occasions
    • Contemporary Choir that sings at the 11:00 a.m. Mass
    • Resurrection choir that sings for funerals
    • SpiritSong Choir usually sings two Saturdays a month at 5:15 p.m. Mass.
