About Antonio Vivaldi's Stabat Mater
Utilizing the first ten verses of the familiar hymn, this heart wrenching 18th century work is known as Vivaldi's first sacred music composition. Performed as part of a musical Stations of the Cross, the readings and music of this devotional service will take us alongside Christ as he suffered the pains of his passion and crucifixion. The text of the Stabat Mater comes from a 13th century hymn to Mary, Mother of God, which portrays her suffering as her son, Jesus Christ endures his final moments before the great resurrection on Easter.
